Aaron Sorkin’s new project links Facebook to Jan. 6 attack

“The Social Network” and “The West Wing” writer Aaron Sorkin says he’s working on a new project linking the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol to Facebook’s capacity to reward conflict.

“Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible because that is what will increase engagement,” Sorkin told podcast “The Town with Mathew Belloni.”

Sorkin’s claim he’ll “be writing about” that connection was greeted as an announcement that his 2010 film about the rise of Facebook is getting a sequel. He addressed the interpretation by saying, “You’re going to need to buy a movie ticket.”

More than 1,200 people have been charged in connection with the lethal Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol prompted by false claims the 2020 presidential election was somehow rigged against Donald Trump, who lost by more than 7 million votes.
